She is best known for her long-term relationship with the famous lesbian novelist Radclyffe Hall. Lady Una was married to the widowed Admiral Troubridge in 1907 with whom she had a daughter, Andrea, in 1910. Her life remained that of a typical woman of her class until 1915, when she met and fell passionately in love with Rasclyffe Hall, then in a relationship with Mabel Veronica Batten, known as Ladye. Her death in 1916 paved the way for Radclyffe’s and Una’s relationship.
They moved between France and England, where they had circles of lesbian frinds including the lesbian painter Romaine Brooks. In the early 1930s Una began to experience a series of health problems and a nurse, the Russian expatriate Evguenia Souline, was engaged to look after her. Hall fell in love with Evguenia, and Una was to share Hall with her until Hall’s death in 1943.
Una herself was the object of several other women’s affections, including the writer Naomi Jacob, but she refused any other liaison. Following Hall’s death, Una moved first to Florence and then to Rome. She was buried in the Verano Cemetry in Rome, contrary to her whishes to be buried next to Hall at Highgate Cemetry in London.
